Ms. Cheng, re: 哪里 /那里, in both the "ABC Dictionary: Eng/Ch, Ch/ Eng“ and " The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary: Ch / Eng," 里 is treated as neutral tone. Is that a 'hard and fast' rule? The 1st dictionary is by John DeFrancis & Zhang Yanyin, 2010 ed.; the 2nd one, by Institue of Linguistics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, 2002 [English editor > Ling Yuan et al]. 非常感谢您, Manny Ramos (Bklyn NY) 20169月11日

Hi, I am recently back in the UK after living for 3 months in China. I am missing my friends in China, so I am really getting to practice 我想你 a lot and the 3rd tones have been really testing in these 3 words (up until now!) Anyway, this video has been a revelation to me and convinced me to sign up! I've recommended your website with my Wechat friends ;) Keep up the good work!

We are honored! Remember, when you have 2 or more third tones together to change the first one to the second tone! If you have more than 2 together like, 我想你 would actually be pronounced (wǒ xiáng nǐ). Here's more info from an earlier comment thread: http://www.yoyochinese.com/comment/5164#comment-5164

It'd be more useful if you spoke more Chinese... gave us some full sentences.

If I may throw out my suggestion as well: I respectfully disagree with you. The reason being that this is a beginner's level; we need to take it in baby steps. Otherwise it's overwhelming. Full sentences are found in more advanced videos.

That's a really good point, Josue. Thanks for your feedback. :)

How would you say,"To seek love and happiness", in pinyin and in the actual Chinese characters. If you don't mind, can you please write it in simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese. I would really really appreciate it if you can help me with this.

So,to make it shorter, the third tone in combination with any other tone(except another 3rd)is actually always a very low flat tone! Why talk so long (almost 24 minutes about it???) Boooooring!!!

Great info Yangyang Laoshi, It's so funny because I have a deep voice already and in the beginning of my studies I was so worried about my Chinese colleagues understanding me. I have heard myths in the beginning with people comparing Mandarin with singing and I thought oh great, I suck at singing. Anyway this info just made it easier for us all.

You are so very kind to us! Very good! Keep these coming! This has helped me a lot. It is very easy to concentrate on vocabulary and sentence construction , and then to forget about how to pronounce correctly. I have bookmarked this lesson so I can practice regularly. The words you have used will serve me well. Thank you!

Terrific! What perfect timing. Just a few days ago my Chinese teacher tried explaining tones to me. It was the 3rd tone I had trouble with. Although he did show me the chart to explain how to pronounce the individual tone, he did not explain the 3rd tone the way you did and there was no mention of a 3rd half tone or a low flat tone. Your video is a big help to me. I'm paying $20 an hour for a live tutor and I honestly think your explanations are better. I will definitely be upgrading soon.

What Yangyang I do not get it
Jackson Du 2 years 11 months ago
Yangyang, thank you for clarifying that third tones are low, flat tones in everyday speech, that a third tone followed by another third tone becomes a second tone, and that a neutral tone is a short first tone. You have made everything much simpler in my mind now! Thanks a bunch!

Thank you Yang Yang. The third tone has been my nemesis for decades. This is the first time I've heard its usage explained so simply.

Ni hao Yangyang, (question and a comment) Why Chinese songs don't have tones? Thank you so much for creating Yoyochinese! I learned so much from you and it has helped me brought back my Chinese language.
Xiao yong 3 years 3 months ago
Glad that you found our lessons helpful. The tone for Chinese songs are took over by the melody, so the tone is offed a bit.
