I know it is wrong, but I wish 上 was 2nd tone instead of 4th tone.

Hi! I have a question about the worksheet, I am unsure of the usage of "le" in #5, "kan yi xia ji dian le." I mean, I know what the sentence means but I'm not sure if I were saying it I'd naturally think to throw in the "le" at the end.. Is the "le" just a colloquial thing to make it sound softer or does it serve a purpose? I'm brushing up on Chinese after not speaking/learning it in quite some time, so these things escape me!

了 (le) at the end of a sentence usually is a completion marker. As in it's __time, which was completed by the elapsed previous time. 看一下几点了 (kàn yí xià jǐ diǎn le) It's mainly used to ask for the current time.

The fonts in the font comparison part of the review sheet seem to be faulty.

Not trying to nag or anything, but the Kai ti font still seems to be wrong as it looks exactly like the Song ti font.

I also do not understand the relevance of the word 下 in 下午 . And 下 in 看一下 . Could you please explain why they are used even though it means Bottom/Next/After , which has no relevance to the actual meaning of "Afternoon" and "Take a look".

You are right. The 下 (xià) in these two words doesn't seem to relate to its basic meaning. Sometimes you just can't actually translate Chinese word-by-word into English. We use English that are closest in meaning to translate them. You may check out the extended meaning of 下 (xià) in our Grammar lesson 40.

If qi1 in xing1 qi1 tian1 , means Sunday. Why does the same Qi1 in Shang4 Xing1 Qi1 means Last Week? Shouldn't it mean last Sunday? Thanks!
amrit02 1 year 10 months ago
星期天 (xīng qī tiān) means Sunday, but 期 (qī) by itself means a period of time. Right, 上星期 (shàng xīng qī) means last week, and last Sunday is 上个星期天 (shàng ge xīng qī tiān).

中午 means noon 下午 means afternoon Why doesn't 上午 mean morning? Or can 上午 also mean morning?
paul1895 1 year 11 months ago
Yes, 上午 also means morning, usually late morning.

Great lessons! I had initiated a couple of attempts at learning Hanzi in the past, but given my busy schedule it never worked out. These lessons are so well-designed, so concise, I might just manage to learn to read some Chinese despite my other obligations. Thanks!

Small mistake in the review worksheet: 晚上 should be evening, not night - right?
Déyáng 2 years 1 month ago
晚上 wan3 shang4 is night. It may be used for evening too, but more appropriate word for evening in Chinese is 傍晚 bang4 wan3.

Thank you so much for showing what each character looks like in different fonts! This is so incredibly helpful. I don't know many characters yet but I have already been confused by some of the differences between fonts I've encountered. Not anymore!
