Am I not hearing correctly when you say "r". You say the Chinese "r" is pronounced "ge" as in garaGE. But when you say ren2 (人), I hear it as something like yen. In other words, I don't hear the ge sound. Can the pronunciation of Chinese "r" change depending on the word?
Magellan 1 year 19 hours ago
Mhm, ren definitely sounds different from yen, but you could be hearing some of the vowels stronger than others, like the en in rén might make you hear more "yen". That's why it's important to learn the pinyin together as words and not to get too hung up on each individual part.

Is the Anki really useful for learning? I have just started and it bothers me that the Anki sounds more like a bot than an actual person. When I listen to Yang Yang, "rén" sounds like "zhen." But in the Anki it sounds like the guy is saying "ren." It's very confusing.
Badsmarty 1 year 10 months ago
The Anki cards are optional study resources, but many students find the Anki cards very helpful. Some native speakers do pronounce the "r" sound a little differently from others, and even within "standard" Mandarin pronunciation, there is some room for slight differences with how much "friction" there is. So in SOME cases it might sound more like the French "j" or even almost like the "s" in the English word "measure" to you, and in OTHER cases it might sound more like the American English "r".

When a Chinese person says " I am Chinese" in China, I suspect they mean both I am ethnically Chinese and a citizen of the PRC. when I say " I am an American" ethnic background does not come into play. Is there an assumption in China that "American" means of European background? How do non-Han Chinese refer to themselves in China? Thanks. Chris Low

mario_e_ 2 years 6 months ago
In English, the first letter of your name is capitalized. When translating to Chinese, yang yang is just a pinyin, no capitalization needed for pinyin. In Chinese characters, it's 秧秧. Hope that answers your question.

in english we speak volumes by the tones we put on our words, they convey the feelings or emotions of the user such as sarcasm or doubt, can you accomplish this in chinese when everyone is putting the same tone on every word?
jesseandreas 2 years 7 months ago
Yes, absolutely! Chinese people do the exact same thing. For example, if you want to express surprise or emphasis, you might raise the entire register of your voice. The first tone will still be high and flat, but just be even higher than if you were speaking in a normal, non-emphasized way. Same with second tone (still rising, but starts higher and goes even high), third tone (still low, but not as low), and fourth tone (still falling, but starts even higher).
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 7 months ago
You can also express feelings and emotions and emphasis by drawing out certain syllables. For instance, if a Chinese person is mistaken for being Korean, he might want to emphasize the "zhōng" when he says "Wǒ shì ZHŌNG gúo rén." That "zhōng" would be said higher than a normal first tone, and also will be sound long and drawn out compared to the normal speaking rate that all the rest of the syllables in that sentence carry. Hope that makes sense!

Yoyo Chinese 2 years 8 months ago
Hello Yang Yang, I have one question. I currently work in China, so I'm using your amazing courses to learn more Chinese. I, however, don't look like a typical "wai guo ren" because I am a quarter Cherokee, so I am very brown. So my question is, do you know a phrase or term to explain that I am a "Native American?" Because if I say "indian" they think I am from India, and if I directly translate "Native American," most Chinese have told me it means I am just from America.
mikechina6199 2 years 9 months ago
That's a great question. We usually refer Indian as 印度人 yin4 du4 ren2, and Native American is 印第安人 yin4 di4 an1 ren2.

Yoyo Chinese 2 years 9 months ago
你好。我是 Jacques。我是加拿大人。 Nǐ hǎo, wǒ shì jiā nà dá rén. As I am still a beginner, here is my question about each translation of countries: would you say it is more a phonetic translation or a semantic representation in each hanzi for the majority of countries? In other words, are the chosen characters reprensenting the way it sounds to Chinese people or something meaningful about each country to translate those names as a rule? I read a lot of what follows and I could not figure out for sure.
Jacko 2 years 9 months ago
To complete my question, here are some examples that will help undersand my query: 意大利 澳大利亚 加拿大 (some recurrent characters seem to represent prononciation in addition to descriptive content) versus 中国 日本 美国 (descriptive content). Am I right? Which is predominant or prevalent? Is it often a mixture of both?
Jacko 2 years 9 months ago
You're right that mostly they are phonetic translations. In most cases, the characters were chosen to represent the sound. But keep in mind that they weren't necessarily translated into Chinese with Mandarin in mind. It's quite possible, for instance, that 加拿大 when pronounced in Cantonese sounds even closer to "Canada" than it does using Mandarin. There are some exceptions, as you've noticed, and that's just a result of a country having been given a certain name by someone at some point
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 9 months ago
in history. We can't be sure why Germany is 德国 or why America is 美国, because those names have been in existence for such a long time. For instance, it's possible that some foreign missionary came up with those translations at some point, and it just stuck. And anyway, China's diplomatic history goes WAY back, long before any naming conventions were standardized.
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 9 months ago
The 德 sounds a bit similar to the first syllable of the German word for Germany - Deutschland. And the 美 sounds a bit like the second syllable of America. These seem like logical guesses, but it doesn't mean they are right :-)
Corey 2 years 9 months ago
Aaah, that makes sense. :)
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 9 months ago
Aaah, that makes sense. :)
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 9 months ago
Thinking about it a bit more, I might have preferred 阿美丽国 For America, because its sound is quite similar and also has a nice meaning.
Corey 2 years 9 months ago
As for "Japan," remember that Japan uses Chinese characters too. So the names of all places in Japan are written the same in Chinese. And China has always been called "middle kingdom" because in ancient times, the Chinese believed that China was at the center of the world.
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 9 months ago
Thank you so much for those very valuable answers. I am always curious to know the meaning of each chosen character and why those were possibly chosen to describe a country rather than any other possible ones (other than phonetically). I like your explanations very much. I know in Japanese, they will use chiefly katakana to translate phonetically the proper foreign names, (among which countries are to be found) rather than by kanji to which a particular meaning is attached.

zhōng guó rén refers to Chinese citizen, and it implies more of nationality of China, rather than race/ethnicity. However, Huá rén refers to all Chinese people around the world, it emphasizes more on race/ethnicity, does not need to hold a Chinese citizenship. Hope that answers your question.

How to know which tone to use while pronouncing America or china
John King 2 years 10 months ago
My guess is John is wondering if there is some sort of rule as to the tone when pronouncing country names. Is that right, John? If that's what you're asking, I'm afraid the answer is that there are no rules for these tones; it requires memorization and practice, just like other words in Chinese. The only exception that for the countries that have guo2/国 in their name, that guo2/国 always has the second tone (as far as I know, anyway :-)
Corey 2 years 10 months ago
Yes. You almost got it. The main challenge I get is to identify whether we should have second tone or forth tone while we write or speak. Is there a rule that country name should have second tone only?
John King 2 years 10 months ago
Only the guo2 part will have a second tone. The other part of the country name will depend on the words in the country's name. For example, for China, the zhong1 part is actually the word for "middle" or "center", and the name of the country in Chinglish is "Middle Kingdom" or "Middle Country". So, most of the time, the tone of these words will be dictated by how those words are normally spoken outside of the context of the country's name. (cont'd)

In the case of the United States, the name is mei3 guo2, which is in Chinglish "Beautiful Country", the word "mei3" roughly meaning "beautiful". When you use mei3 in other contexts, such as describing scenery, you will still speak mei with a 3rd tone. I hope that makes sense. In summary, the words used in the country's name use the same tone they have in other contexts where they are not in a country's name.
Corey 2 years 10 months ago
The good news is... if you give enough context in your sentence, and speak clearly enough, people will usually still understand you even if your tones are off a bit. By the way, I'm just another student here, so take what I say with a large grain of salt :-)
Corey 2 years 10 months ago
Hmm..what do you mean? America is měi guó and China is zhōng guó.
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 10 months ago
I meant, mei having 3rd tone and Zhong having 1st tone. Can this be opposite i.e mei having 1st tone and Zhong having 3rd tone?

In pinyin videos you said that 'e' is always pronounced like 'serve' unless it was after a vowel, but in this video, with the word 'ren,' the 'e' was pronounced like in 'takEN.' Why?
Bilchick 2 years 11 months ago
Why isn't the word 'ren' pronounced with the regular pinyin 'e?'
Bilchick 2 years 11 months ago
Because it's followed be "n". "en" is another pinyin sound like "en" in "takEN". Please check out our Pinyin lesson 5 for more detail.
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 11 months ago
When writing down a word with pinyin, does it matter which letter the tone mark is on?
Bilchick 2 years 11 months ago
Yes, it does. There are some general rules about the tone marks. Please check out this page by Pinyin.info: http://www.pinyin.info/rules/where.html. Hope that helps.
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 11 months ago
Hi Bilchick, the rules are spelled out pretty clearly here: http://www.pinyin.info/rules/where.html

Hi! I have just started to learn Chinese. I live in Sweden and I started to go to a class with a teacher from China. I thought his explanations on how the words should sound was hard to grasp. Then I found you on the web, and everything got better. I have one question. In my class I´ve learned that "I am Swedish" is "wˇo shì ruì diˇan rén". In the words "ruì" and "rén" I think the r sound completely different. In ruì I think the r sounds like the r in rain and in rén the r sounds like you said.

Sorry I confused the mei with second tone with "middle". My difficulty is with the word with same tone and different meaning. I hope you understand my question.
sureshkafle 3 years 5 months ago
Hi YangYang, I notice several words may have same tone, but different meaning. For example, mei with second tone we learned meaning "middle" has four other mei with second tone with entirely different meanings. How do we know which mei is meant? Is it purely on the context or there are other clues as well?
sureshkafle 3 years 5 months ago
You are right. There are many words have the same pinyin but different Chinese characters. Yes, it depends on its context. Btw, I don't think mei2 means middle. Are you talking about the negation word mei2?
