I have read this phonetic rule in a chinese learning book. Is it correct ? - A 3rd-tone syllable becomes a half 3rd tone when it is immediately followed by a 1st , 2nd, 4th or neutral tone syllable, i.e . only the first half (the falling part) of the tone is articulated, and is immediately followed by the next syllable

In one of the beginners course lectures, you say if you like her you should tell her. I notice that in most sentences, the order is subject, object, verb. In the above sentence the ta is last in both phrases. Is either order OK or what?
lgrenzer550 11 months 4 weeks ago
Chinese is mostly a subject-verb-object language like English, but there are of course exceptions.

I live in California, and I work for a Taiwanese company. I'm the only Latino in the company, and my coworkers speak English solely to communicate with me. Also, there is a big Chinese community living in California. This year I went to Lunar New Year Festival in Monterey Park, and 626 Market. I started to watch Chinese news and TV show even though I'm able to understand few words at the moment. However, I want to know if all this is enough to learn Chinese? or is going to China needed?
jsalmendares262 1 year 3 weeks ago
No, sounds like you are surrounded by Chinese speakers who can practice with you. Monterey Park is pretty much China lite.
Jenny at Yoyo Chinese 1 year 3 weeks ago
OK Then can I just write it as wán'? And pronouce it withot the r sound
lgrenzer550 1 year 2 months ago
Yes, you just need to understand when other people use it. :)
Jenny at Yoyo Chinese 1 year 2 months ago
Hi What is the deal with words like wán(r). Does that mean you can spell it either with an n or an r, or what? Are there two possible ways to pronounce this? Thanks!
lgrenzer550 1 year 2 months ago
The (r) there is for the "erhua", the final r sound to a word or phrase, commonly hear in northern China (Beijing accent is notorious for this). It is optional! :)

Hi I have noticed that in the 120 basic lessons several of the lessons are not included in the Anki decks. (2,12,14,35,88,93-95, and 113-118.) Although I am very grateful for all your work in providing the Anki decks, I was wondering why you left those out.
lgrenzer550 1 year 2 months ago
Hi, we're really glad that you guys are finding the Anki cards helpful! Lessons that doesn't have Anki cards are usually part of a series of videos, and/or there's no particular new vocabulary/new sentences in that lesson. Therefore not all lessons will have both a sentence deck and a vocabulary deck.

Hİ I moved to China to learn chinese here. I bought internet 2 days ago I have an access to Yoyochinese web site but the videos not working. Should I buy VPN? IS there any other way to solve this problem? Thanks
gökhan Uzun 1 year 5 months ago
Hi gökhan, thanks for signing up! Until our servers have been set up in China, it's recommended that you use a VPN to be able to see the videos.
Micah at Yoyo Chinese 1 year 5 months ago
The Anki Vocabulary deck pronounces movie differently than you do here. On the deck it pronounces "shadow" as yung while you pronounce it yeeng. I'm sticking with the way you say it. Is the yung pronunciation an accent from a certain part of China?
cengizbug 1 year 7 months ago
Yeah, I've been there before. It's an allophone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allophone). I've mentioned it to Chinese teachers and it takes them a minute to even hear the difference between "dian yeeng" and "dian young" (it sounds almost exactly like the English "young", but with a third tone contour). As a foreign language learner, you'll have to learn new allophones as you go, and especially distinguish by context.
chambm 1 year 7 months ago
I did not know about this! Thank you so much!!!
cengizbug 1 year 7 months ago
Dear YangYang. I am using the Anki flash cards and I really like them. Is there a way to repeat a lesson immediately after completing that lesson. I continue to get the warning that I have completed the lesson and that I should come back later.
num1tailhooker 2 years 2 months ago
There are instructions on page 9 and 10 in the anki pdf guide. Basically, you would have to replicate the deck, study off the replication, then delete it. We hope that helps. Feel free to let us know if you have any further question.

I love your teaching technique. This is a lot more fun than I thought it is. Couple questions: 1. How to say Singapore in Mandarin? 2. The following food names in Mandarin please: Beef Chowfun, Fried Rice, Orange Chicken, String Been Chicken, Sizzling Rice Soup 3. How to describe a personality of a person who values ethics more than money? Any good slang to use? Big thanks in advance.
gnos0311@gmail.com 2 years 3 months ago
Glad that you were having fun studying! :) Here are the translation to your questions: 1. Singapore = 新加坡 xīn jiā pō。 2. Beef Chowfun = 牛肉炒粉 niú ròu chǎo fěn, Fried Rice = 炒面chǎo fàn, orange chicken = 香橙鸡丁xiāng chéng jī dīng, string bean chicken = 四季豆鸡 sì jì dòu jī. The name of these dishes may varies a bit in translation. You may say the person has 民族精神 mín zú jīng shén. Hope that helps.

Hi, there. I am also in China and experience slow videos with and without a VPN. YouTube worked better for me also, but for the paid version, the videos are not on YouTube. My solution has been to download the videos using Download Helper, which is free on Mozilla Firefox. The downloads may take 20 minutes or so, but I can watch them without interruption.

Hi, I'm 15 years old and have been learning Chinese at school for about a year now. A couple months ago I went to China as part of a school exchange trip, and stayed with a host family for a week, before spend another 2 weeks traveling around China (and loved it intensely). Although I learned a fair amount, I am still not confident with my Chinese. My exchange partner is coming to stay with me in a month and I am very nervous. Do you have any tips or recommendations for me? - Thank you! :)

Never mind my previous comment. I synced the desktop computer, and it said there were inconsistencies between it and what I had uploaded for my tablet. It said to upload and overwrite, then from the tablet I synced, did a total download overwriting what I had, and everything came out OK! The anki program manual is hard to understand.
djbloom 2 years 5 months ago
Hi YangYang. I love this course. I am having trouble with loading the flashcards, however. I have read the instructions, and tried to move the individual files into the 3 decks, as recommended, on my desk computer. They looked OK, but when I open anki on my tablet or phone, all the cards are under the default deck. Do you know what I have done wrong?

Yangyang At the Anki Import File stage, when I selected the downloaded folder of Anki Vocabulary Deck to import into Anki, the 120 files within the folder opened in the Import File window for selection. Do I have to select each individually for import, or is there a Select All to efficiently import them? Holding the shift key and clicking the files did not work. Please advise, thanks. sky
skyim 2 years 6 months ago
Hi skyim. You would have to import them lesson by lesson. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 6 months ago
Would it be possible to add a download option for the anki word list and audio separately? I would like to import the anki list in memrise, but it's not possible with the anki file. Have you considered posting the decks on memrise as well?

Hi Yangyang, I am taking your six month plan, and even though I am watching lesson 1 on Beginner conversational Chinese, for some reason it says the video should be six minutes, while it really is 3:34, and I just want to know if I am on the right track. The first day I watched the wrong videos, and then when I listen to the audio review, sometimes, I don't have the lecture notes...I'm quite clusmy, so could you clarify to me if I am mistaking something?
chachaoho 2 years 7 months ago
Thank you for studying with Yoyo Chinese. The first day should be Chinese Pronunciation Pinyin course lesson 1, 2, and 3. Make sure you watch the lessons from the corresponding course. You may click on the lesson title, it should direct you to the correct lesson. :)

Yoyo Chinese 2 years 7 months ago
Hello Yangyang, i am planing to learn basic Chinese and then advance into more complicated Mandarin words but i am finding the Chinese character symbols extremely confusing. My question is that is it a realistic approach to learn the language without these symbols. King regards Harrison Starkey, Australia.
Harrison Starkey 2 years 7 months ago
We would suggest you to focus on speaking skills first as you begin your learning process. Don't worry about the characters until you have acquired basic conversational skills. We will be releasing a character course soon, hope that will help in the future.
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 7 months ago
Hello Yangyang, I want to upgrade my subscription but I have a question, when its gonna be available the course of Chinese characters? Also if I upgrade I have a certification? Sorry for my bad English, 谢谢

How much of the Beginner Course can I realistically skip if I've been through three levels of Pimsleur's Mandarin program? Pimsleur left much to be desired but I have learned a lot of phrases and vocab, as well as tone recognition. Any suggestions about how much I can skip or modify?
hybridremix 2 years 8 months ago
We are not exactly familiar with Pimsleur's three levels Mandarin, so we can hardly say what you may skip. Each of our lessons are very short, you may just brows through them quickly if you've already learned them, and spend more time on the ones you haven't seen before. You may be surprise to find small concepts that you might have missed.
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 8 months ago
Oh, yes. I browsed the first 9 or 10 free lessons and knew almost everything already, but the tone pair rules were awesome to learn. It was really confusing to hear Pimsleur explain a word with two 3rd tone syllables, then the native speaker sounded like they were not using two 3rd tones. Learning to 3+3 tone pair was an immediate "ah-ha!" moment, because my brain started remembering "mei3 you3", "hen3 yuan3", "hen3 you3 ming2", and how the native speaker sounded when saying them. It was great!

Hi, Having casually followed Chineasy, which is principally about character recognition, I thought I should add some conversational Mandarin as at present I can recognise quite a few characters and work out some words but the verbal side of things for me is embarrassingly blank. So Yang Yang, you have just taken on possibly your most 'difficult' student for the next year. I know it is all up to me, and I hope I can return in a years time and say a little more than Nǐ Hǎo.

Fawn101 2 years 11 months ago
Yes, we've heard Chineasy, and heard good things about it. They use illustrations to associate with characters, and that help students to remember easier, which is a great idea. We are not exactly that familiar with how their courses are structured though. We are currently working on developing a Chinese character course as well. Hope it will help in the future.

I particularly like that the literal meaning be given below the English equivalent and also that the traditional counterpart be shown below the simplified version of hanzi. Since I have studied some Japanese kanji, I can compare, although the meaning of similar ideograms are different at times. Whenever the Chinese reading tends to erase in my mind what I have learned for the same kanji, I use a keyboard shorcut on my Mac that allows me to have the computer read my selection in Japanese. Thank U

Hey, the pronunciation here http://www.chinese-names.net/word/%E5%BD%B1 is little different than in the movie, is it also correct or i shouldn't listen to this site?
shou 2 years 11 months ago
You are right, it does sound a bit different, but we believe Yangyang has a better and correct pronunciation for ying3. :)
Yoyo Chinese 2 years 11 months ago
That dictionary's pronunciation sounds odd to me too, ... more like yeng, but there is no such pinyin. On the other hand, in the Chinese on the Street video about speaking English, I did hear some peculiar sounding pronunciations for ying1 in 英语. So maybe this particular pinyin - ying- has a lot of local variation in pronunciation for some reason.
Corey 2 years 11 months ago
Yes, you are right. It may varies a bit by their local accents.

nin hao lao shi , i am learning chinese ,it's been abt 20 days this language is hard i want to ask that : 1]do u follow the exact tones when u speak fast and can u understand i mean si' and si^ has different meanings .how many such sentences are there in hanyu. 2]please tell me that is chinese grammer similar as english?? ie if in chinese we can say my friend i love u then will it be as wo pengyou ai ni . how does the gramer works please show me systematically.zaijian
Aryal 2 years 11 months ago
Yes, the tones remain the same, even when speaking quickly. And there are a lot of homonyms in Chinese, but in context, it usually doesn't create much confusion or ambiguity. For example, it's unlikely that anyone gets confused in English by the multiple meanings of the word "can" when you talk about "I can do something" and "a can of Coke." Same idea in Chinese. For grammar, please check out our "Chinese Grammar" lessons. It starts with the rules for Chinese word order.

guillemcabu 3 years 1 month ago
Our courses mainly focus on conversational Chinese. However, we do cover lots of vocabulary that's listed on HSK3 vocab list through out our lessons even in our beginner conversational Chinese lessons. We suggested you to start from the beginner, which we believe you may quickly review through the ones that you have already known, and than move on to new lessons. Please download our lecture notes to find out the kind of words/sentences we cover, and check out our study schedule for guidance.

Hello, quick question: I seem to hear a difference in the way dian ying (movie) and dian nao (computer) are pronounced in this video as opposed to the way they are pronounced in Mandarin Tone Pairs Practice (Part 2).mp3. Can you comment? Thanks
OrlandoProj 3 years 2 months ago
We've checked the audio and compared with the video. The audio quality is more crystal clear compare to video and the second words of these compound words on the video sound a bit longer compare to the audio. That might have cause a bit difference to you. They should sound the same though. Hope that helps. :)
Yoyo Chinese 3 years 2 months ago
I'm still a bit confused. It seemed to me that in the BCC video lesson 1, the 3rd tone dips and then rises, which is how I've heard other video instructors describe the 3rd tone and the reason I assumed the tone mark has the shape of a V. Yet, in the Pinyin Lesson 2 and audio review, the 3rd tone is described as more of a straight low tone. At first I thought that maybe it's just the one-syllable words (like 'wo' and 'hao') that fall and rise, until I heard you pronounce dian ying & dian yao.
OrlandoProj 3 years 2 months ago
Okay, I see what you're talking about now. In all of the third tone examples in this lesson, such as "diàn yǐng," "diàn nǎo," "wǒ," and also "nǐ," Yangyang uses what is called a "full third tone." A full third tone is one that slightly dips down deep, and then rises back up again. Syllables with third tone are spoken with a "full third tone" when they are exaggerated or spoken in isolation.
Yoyo Chinese 3 years 2 months ago
That's why Chinese teachers will often teach a full third tone--because they are exaggerating it and usually saying it by itself. But in real life, tones are rarely spoken in isolation. When followed by another tone, which is most of the time, the third tone does not rise at the end. It's just low and flat. That is called a "half third tone." That is what you're hearing in the tone pairs, and what you'll hear most of the time in spoken Chinese. Hope this answers your question!
Yoyo Chinese 3 years 2 months ago
Yes it does. I appreciate your thorough response. Xie xie :)

Yi YangYang! I am your newest paying student. I should have signed up sooner but I was studying with so many other programs that I thought I might be wasting my money. Not enough hours in day to add something else. It is obvious that you are a great teacher so I changed my mind. I am very excited to have you as my teacher! One of the reasons I decided to learn Chinese was that I thought it is the most difficult language to learn, a huge challenge. It looks like I could be wrong, u make it easy.

Hello. I was just wondering if Mandarin has short and long vowels?? I am studying Thai also and vowel length is crucial. I know you said that Mandarin has 409 sounds in total. So if one was to prolong a certain sound would it change its meaning or is vowel length irrelevant?? Thanks a lot :)
Hector 3 years 9 months ago
No, the length of the vowels is irrelevant.
